How to shop for area rugs
Selecting the right area rug isn't as easy as you may think. On the one hand, you need to be sure it’s well-coordinated, so it highlights and accents but, on the other, it shouldn't be a perfect match; otherwise, your home will look a little "museum-like," as though no one lives there. It also needs to be the right size because, while it may seem counterintuitive, a too-small rug can make a room appear cramped and crowded (Please read on to see our directions for measuring.) Area rugs do more than look great, though; they provide warmth, comfort and have many other benefits. When you visit our area rug store in Kenosha, WI, we promise you’ll be inspired!
How to measure for your area rug
Ideally, area rugs should be large enough to fit under significant pieces of furniture, such as sofas and coffee tables with a 12-to-18-inch extension of bare floor sticking out. If that’s not possible, it should still be large enough to anchor the furniture's front legs, with the same extension of the bare floor in full view.
Dining rooms and bedrooms can be a little more challenging. Generally, the rug should be large enough to fit under the dining room table and the chairs, even when they are pulled out so people can rise and sit. If that’s not possible, make sure the rug at least anchors the front legs but is balanced and stable enough, so the table doesn't move. For the bedroom, you can always place two matching scatter rugs on each side of the bed.

Do you need padding for an area rug?
Yes. Just as carpet padding protects the rug from the floor, so does a cushion for these surfaces. It also protects the floor since backings can be somewhat rough. Padding provides a surface between the two.
Sizing is as essential to padding as the rug and should be slightly smaller, so it lies flat. This way, the rug is secured to the floor and guards against potential tripping. A good rule to follow is that the pad should be one inch less on all four sides of the rug or two inches less for each dimension.
